Outstanding Saturday with Outstanding Play

Ok, so today was a productive day. Taking the kids to get donuts, cleaning out toys that we didn't need, getting a little practice in with the new pitching machine and cleaning up around the house provided for a full day.

But there was always a little room for some sports on the tube...and the radio...and the computer.

Let's see: Georgetown vs. West Virginia basketball; Kentucky vs. Pittsburgh in the 15th "Who Cares Bowl" of the post-season; Notre Dame women almost handing UConn their second straight loss after 90 straight wins; Arkansas basketball getting off to 1-0 in SEC play; the Seahawks showing New Orleans who "dat" was; Rex Ryan getting his personal demons exorcised after Nick Folk "out Vinatieri-ed" the Colts; the Ouachita women getting a big 76-61 win at Harding to kick off GSC play; and the Ouachita men coming up a bit short in a 59-55 loss at heavily-favored Harding.

Whew....okay. maybe there was a lot of room.

Out of all of the plays that I saw today, Marshawn Lynch's highlight-filled touchdown run to give the Seahawks a 41-30 lead over the defending Super Bowl Champion Saints had to be one of the best in a long, long time.

If you haven't seen it, click here: Marshawn Lynch Runs Through Saints (well, at least until NBC and the NFL take it down...then we can find it somewhere else).

It made me think of another outstanding play from early last baseball season. You know, one of those plays where you can just rewind and rewind and rewind at it will never get old.

I immediately thought of Opening Day 2010 and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle's between-the-leg flip to first base from foul territory to retire Lou Marson after Buehrle had stuck out his foot to deflect Marson's grounder up the middle.

If you haven't seen that one, view it here from MLB.com

That made me think: which one is a more outstanding play?
Buehrle's Opening Day between-the-leg flip or Marshawn Lynch's Run Through the Saints?

Comment away.......

  1. I vote for Lynch. Buehrle's only real challenge in making that put out was time. Lynch broke or eluded eight tackles on his way to the end zone. So, scoring on degree of adversity faced, Lynch gets the nod.

  2. I gotta say Lynch because of the stakes involved. Buehrle's play was on Opening Day. Lynch's closed out a playoff game against a massive favorite (the defending champs, no less).

  3. I could go with either one...the flip with the glove between the legs right to Konerko at first was pretty amazing...all of that after he stuck his foot out and chased the ball down...nobody ever said pitchers were athletes - pretty athletic play.

I think the thing that made Lynch's so special was the stiff arm/push down of the defender...that was pretty special.
